The American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado is partnering with Pueblo West Fire Department to make homes safer in Pueblo West, Colorado.In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, January 21, 2019, volunteers with the Red Cross will team up with the Pueblo West Fire Department and volunteers from the community to install free smoke alarms. The installation area will be in the Pueblo West Mobile Home Park along and south of Joe Martinez Blvd. “Our goal will be to make as many homes as safe as possible,” said Fire Prevention Division Chief Brad Davidson. “Home fires are our biggest threat and installing smoke alarms will help save lives.”Event Details:

Target Area: Mobile Home Park south of Joe Martinez Blvd, Pueblo West.How Can You Help?We need volunteers to help with the smoke alarm installations. This will require being outdoors and walking door-to-door. Smoke alarm installation training will be provided at the meeting place from 9AM to 10 AM at the Fire Station. Volunteers must be 18 or older unless accompanied by an adult. “Sound the Alarm” is a nationwide Red Cross effort to reduce the fatalities and injuries caused by home fires. The campaign has been credited with saving more than 485 lives across the country since it began in late 2014. “This program has been a huge success,” said Kendall Shafield, Disaster Program Specialist based in Pueblo. “In the Colorado and Wyoming Region, we have installed more than 19,600 smoke alarms and made nearly 10,000 homes safer since it started.”The key to the success of the program is the community volunteers who join in to help make their community safer. “Our goal is to touch at least 100 homes on Saturday and we need everyone to help,” said Dave Duran, volunteer coordinator for the Home Fire Campaign in southeast Colorado. “By volunteering with the Red Cross, you can truly make a difference in someone’s life. Working smoke alarms in a home reduce the risk of death by half. Having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014 in an effort to reduce these tragedies and save lives.
