[ARCHIVED] Fire Restrictions Issued for Pueblo County

Pueblo County implemented stage 1 fire restrictions on Friday, May 18 due to the ongoing dry conditions and very high fire danger that persists in the region. This decision was made by Sheriff Kirk Taylor in consultation with area fire chiefs.

“Although there has been some precipitation in Pueblo West, criteria used to determine when fire restrictions are put into place indicate we should not wait until the next significant fire before we become pro-active. These restrictions are in consideration of the entire county, not just Pueblo West. We ask our residents to abide by these restrictions and if you believe there is a fire or any type of illegal burning, you report it immediately,” said Pueblo West Fire Chief, Brian Caserta.

Stage I restrictions prohibit:

• Open burning, except fires and campfires within constructed fire grates inside the developed camp and picnic grounds, charcoal grills and wood burning stoves at private residences. These areas must be cleared of all flammable materials. (Exemptions allowed for agricultural burning on a per case basis may be granted by appropriate fire jurisdiction).

• The sale or use of fireworks without a permit.

• Outdoor smoking except inside a vehicle or stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren of all flammable materials.

During stage 1 fire restrictions, the Pueblo West Fire Department will not be issuing burn permits.  Violations of the fire restrictions can result in fines and mandatory court appearances.

Pueblo County joins the Bureau of Land Management, the San Carlos Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest, which includes land in Pueblo County, and several other counties along the Front Range in issuing Stage I fire restrictions.
