Collections & Distribution team recognized for safety

Collections and Distribution employee with safety recognition

The Pueblo West Metro District Water Department Collection and Distribution (C&D) team was recognized this month for their commitment to safety.

"Every time I made a suggestion to improve the safety environment in their department, it was fixed," said Steve McDowell, Metro District Safety Coordinator. "The C&D Department has had a 100% turnaround."

The C&D Department is responsible for the collection (sewer lines) and delivery (water lines) to homes and businesses. They identify and repair any broken or leaking water and wastewater lines to ensure water pump stations are working. Performing these duties brings with it an increased risk of slips and falls, which accounts for approximately 800 workplace deaths annually, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

"This is one of the best crews I've had in my 37 years with the Metro District," said Rusty Ethredge, C&D Manager. "They've shown the willingness to do anything. They're happy every morning and they always have the attitude of 'let's do the job and get it done.'"

McDowell said Metro District departments are continually working to build a workplace culture that prioritizes safety.

"The recognition of C&D is part of a program to recognize departments throughout the Metro District that are making working safety a top priority," McDowell said.
