Pueblo West Metro District Aquatic Center Update

[January 11, 2022 - Pueblo West, CO]-- Pueblo West Metropolitan District Parks and Recreation Director, Carol Cosby, gave an update and financial data for the 2016 voter approved aquatic center at the regularly scheduled board of directors meeting, January 10, 2022.

In 2016, Pueblo West Metropolitan District voters approved ballot initiative “1A” to dedicate excess revenue over the state-mandated TABOR limit to use specifically for an aquatic center. Also in 2016, Pueblo County voters approved a project initiative that includes funding for a Pueblo West aquatic center. According to resolution 2016-70, legally these funds must be used for an aquatic center and can not be used for any other purpose, such as streets and roads.

As of January 2022, we’ve approximately received a little over a million dollars in excess TABOR funds for the aquatic fund, since collecting in 2017. The aquatic center committee has held 5 meetings while in the design phase and has worked with a local design firm to develop initial building plans. Currently the aquatic committee is working on rezoning the land on Spaulding Avenue to develop in the future as the aquatic center site.

Moving forward, the team will continue working as a whole evaluating necessary steps expected by this initiative. Until further funding sources have been identified, a construction timeline will not be established.

Pueblo West Metropolitan District’s general funds can not support the aquatic center because of limited funding. Pueblo West Metropolitan District continues to work with local community partners to find additional funding for the aquatic center and those within the private sector as well.
