[ARCHIVED] Parks and Recreation Sports Programming

A youth football game in progress

Coming off of a challenging 2020 for all of us, it is exciting here at Pueblo West Parks and Recreation to see our parks full again on weekends and evenings for sporting events.

Pueblo West Parks and Recreation’s sports programs serve nearly 4,000 Pueblo West participants annually, primarily kids 4-12 years of age.  We offer developmental leagues for kids to learn the skills and rules of the sports, gain confidence, learn sportsmanship, learn to love the sport, and have FUN. They are designed as six-week, affordable programs so kids can try many different sports throughout the year.

Currently, Parks and Recreation offers seven different youth sports, most being offered twice a year.  We offer three different adult sports, which also are offered several times a year. All youth sports are six-week seasons except for lacrosse, tennis lessons, and golf lessons. Golf and Tennis lessons are two-week sessions. A new lacrosse clinic from 10 a.m.-noon on August 13 will encourage kids ages 5-13 to try their hand at a new sport until we generate enough interest to offer leagues.

During the Spring of 2021, we had great participation in our sports programs, especially outdoor soccer, youth baseball, and T-ball.  During the spring, we were still following County COVID procedures to safeguard participants, including mask mandates for parks and rec staff, officials, and coaches, closed dugouts, and no bleachers at the fields. Games were scheduled with a 15-minute gap between games in order to reduce the amount of traffic at the parks. Team sizes were capped to reduce the number of players on the field at one time, and equipment and facilities were cleaned and sanitized between every game.

If you drove by Lovell Park during the summer, you would once again have seen the parking lots full of cars of participants both watching and competing. While summer sports operated under no restrictions, we have continued the sanitation of equipment and facilities. Dugouts have opened, games are scheduled back to back, teams are able to play at full roster size, and no masks are required.

The summer sports lineup included girl’s softball, baseball, T-ball, and sand volleyball. For the adults, we had men’s and coed softball as well as sand volleyball.  Mondays we offered adult men’s softball, Tuesday youth girl’s softball and adult volleyball, Wednesday adult Coed softball. Thursday evenings were our busiest with T-ball games on all three ballfields and youth sand volleyball games. We ended the week on Fridays with youth baseball.

The golf and tennis programs also were a huge hit this summer.  Classes were full, and additional classes were offered due to waiting lists. Golf was operated jointly with Desert Hawk Golf Course, which did an amazing job running the program.  In addition to sports programming, we offered a variety of leisure programs such as dance, Kidz Corner, and art classes, which proved to be well accepted by residents. We also offered some virtual classes in music and art.

As our summer programs come to a close, we are excited to announce a busy fall lineup of sports and activities.  Our fall season will include flag football (ages 5-13), outdoor soccer (4-12), sand volleyball (8-11), youth basketball (5-12),and  indoor soccer (4-8). For the adults, we hope to field volleyball and pick-up basketball leagues.

We depend heavily on parents to volunteer to coach for our youth sports leagues. Volunteer coaches get their child's registration fee refunded after they submit all the required volunteer coaching paperwork  (background check form, coach test, concussion certification).

We encourage even more community members to take advantage of the programs we offer and to consider stepping up as a volunteer coach.  Visit the Parks and Recreation page at to view the full slate of offerings as well as registration and scheduling information.
